John m. McDowell, MSW, LMSW

John has been in practice since 2014.  He is a Licensed Master Social Worker with the State of Michigan and earned his Masters Degree in Social Work from The University of Michigan.


John specializes in working with kids, adults, and families who struggle with ADHD, oppositional and defiant behaviors, positive parenting strategies, family conflict, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and LGBTQ+ understanding.  He has been trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for kids and adolescents and certified as a Family Acceptance Project Risk Screener, i.e. assess for family rejection and related health risks in LGBT youth. A certificate via NASW: Clinical Concerns & Gender Identity. I have advocated for children in getting IEPs/504 plans in the school. IJohn has facilitated school presentations on topics of LGBTQ+ awareness, ADHD, trauma, and mental health awareness.

John has been practicing as a clinical social worker primarily working with children, youth, and adolescents and their families struggling with a myriad of issues. 

John accepts direct payment at the time of service and will bill for services should consumers have manage care coverage of which John is a panel provider.  


I believe in using evidenced based treatment modalities, like CBT, DBT informed, parenting strategies (Barkley/Kazdin), mindfulness, and relaxation. I pride myself in being culturally sensitive, and LGBTQ+ and gender non-conforming affirming therapist.
